Saturday 27th November 2010

Today was a absolutely beautiful day – the sun was out and it felt like summer.  Unfortunately it is a busy time of year so Kev and I didn’t have a chance to go geocaching today… or so we thought.  We had just finished up at Kev’s work Christmas party and was on the way home.  As we were driving along the motorway  our iPhone beeped with the notification of GC2JRMC Radio Waves (Auckland).  It was going the wrong direction but as we read the description and noted the cache was dedicated to us by our friends Kiwifamily, we knew we had to be on the FTF hunt (by the way, Kev was over the moon!).

With the radio up high and one of our favourite AC/DC songs playing (Thunderstuck) we quickly arrived at the destination and parked right up to the cache.  I zoomed in and squished my fingers between the rocks and hard metal base – ouch!  Kev was in no mood to soothe my aching fingers and he went on his hand and knees and search for the micro (note that Kev hardly searches, so it was the FTF adrenalin that was pumping in his veins).  Kev quickly found it, but just as quickly dropped it!  Now it was truly lost!  Kev was laying on the rocks and pulling them out searching to no avail.  I had another go and just couldn’t find that teny tiny black magnetic nano.  We were about to give up when I tried one more time and yes I found it! Best of all, we were the FTF!  Kev quickly posed for the photo with his beloved coffee which was part of the dedication for the cache.

We had a tiny bit of light left so decided to get the cache just down the road GC2J5H4 Hingaia Reserve (Auckland).  My GPS took me straight to the prime suspect and I started to search.  The search took a little longer than I thought but luckily Kev had brought the torch.  After tramping along on my hands and knees I found the cache – our second for the night!

Cath is a shining light.

Sunday we are again busy so won’t be able to get in any caching but for the month of December Kevs_Team is trying for a cache every day of the month so we can get some more achievement badges from BadgeGen and hopefully will hit 400 caches by the new year!

Cache you later! (that’s the best signing off phrase I could come up with – bet it’s used elsewhere even though it is so lame lol)

Monday 22nd November 2010 – Kev’s Citizenship Day

Today was Kev’s big day – he was becoming a Kiwi (and yes he’s still marrying me so it wasn’t just about staying in the country lol).

We didn’t need to be seated until 6.20pm so had a little time to kill before the ceremony at the Auckland Town Centre.  We decided to get the cache closest by GC2G1YP Culture Cache Auckland: Te Waharoa O Aotea.  I went straight to it and instead of pulling out the cache, pushed it back further!  After debating what to use and how to do it, Kev Snr sorted it out and quickly (and very discretely lol) retrieved it.

The next big dilemma, no pen!  Normally Kev Snr always has a pen, but not today!  I quickly went to Borders and after sifting through all the $20+ pens found a more reasonable $3 pen.  We signed the log and returned the cache.  This is a truly beautiful sculpture in a lovely updated Aotea Square.

Now for the real business, Kev’s Citizenship Ceremony.  We were seated at 6.20pm and didn’t leave until just after 9pm!  I’m so glad I’m a Kiwi as the ceremony was soooo long!  Glad to see Kev kept himself occupied during the procession, here he is chatting to his neighbour, and I’m sure he’s showing the geocaching iPhone application!

This is Kev and the Mayor Len Brown- I had to sit and watch at least 1000 people walk across the stage one by one, and Kev must have been the quickest, didn’t get many photos!

And finally Kev sitting back in his seat with his official Citizenship certificate.  He tried the “just going to the toilet” trick to sneak out early, but they took his certificate at the door lol.

A long night but having another Kiwi on the team might improve our stats!

Until our next caching adventure,

Cath

Sunday 21st November 2010.

Today was a caching day with Kai_Gotti.  We met up for lunch at Altura, Albany (yum yum!).  The first cache was Kai’s GC2ATPZ Between SATO and RPM (North Shore City).  Kev and I came here a couple of months ago, but due to the wet ground and me wearing jandels, we slipped and skidded and deciding to come back when the ground was dry.  What a perfect day to come back – with the owner!  Tell you what, we were lucky we did as this was an amazing hide!  One of the best cammo jobs we have ever seen.

Kev and Cath.

As we had the master geocacher with us, we used his knowledge to help us find a previous DNF for us, GC1ZEH2 Stairway To Caching (Auckland).  With Kai around, we always have success!  The hardest thing was finding parking on a busy Sunday afternoon!

Cath and Kai_Gotti walking back to the car.

I highly recommend going caching with Kai_Gotti as he quickly found our next two caches.  The first one was GC2BEPY A Different Glyn (Auckland, North Shore).  This was another sneaky hide.

Cath after the find.

The next cache was across the road, GC2BEQ9 A Dam in Sherwood (Auckland, North Shore).  After a quick brisk walk and a long among the overgrown bush area, Kai did the “I found it” dance lol.

Kev at the dam.

Driving through Browns Bay, Kai went to help us with two caches he previously found, GC216V0 Browns Bay Bus Stop…The sequel….(Auckland) and GC211FP Browns Bay Bus Stop.  After I had a quick look and Kai came to help, he confirmed they had been muggled and we posted DNF’s.

Next cache was GC2BCXT Pasta 3 – Spaghetti Meat Balls (Auckland).  Kev stayed in the car while Kai and I went off hunting.  After a few minutes and a few muggles passerby’s, Kai found the cache.

The last stop was Three Streams.  I went with Kai’s help to go get GC12EPB Three Streams (Auckland), another clever hide.  I then helped Kai get the letterbox cache GC1789W Mam, Upsize my Three Streams cache please?!(Akld).  Kev and I got this back in May, and that bridge is still broken!

That was our last cache of the day and we can’t wait until we go out geocaching with Kai another day!

Saturday 20th November 2010

Yesterday when Kev was at his training in the city, he went for a nearby cache GC22PCT A Saint to be sure (Auckland).  Being by himself I didn’t hold out much hope (lol) and I was right, he logged a DNF.

Today with me on his side, we had a better chance to get some caches!  The first one we went for was the new chirp cache GC2JD6G Chirp, Chirp ! (Auckland).  We were driving home the other day when we received this notification for this one, but I was too tired and told Kev we would do it in the weekend.

We excitedly walked down the track and waited for our “chirp” which told us how much longer to walk.

Kev receiving the chirp.

Seeing a familiar sight of trodden bush geotrail, I quickly found the big ammo can.

Cath with the cache.

Next we drove to GCM8NG JFK Reserve (Auckland).  We came to this park about a month or so ago but as we both were sick and the walk to long, we sat in the car and ate ice-cream from Mr Whippy.  This time we got out of the car and went searching.  As we were crawling around the trees someone asked if we were ok, Kev defensively said yes, then she waved the GPS, phew!  It was Sue of SUENDAN.  After a quick search I come up with the find, then we had a nice lovely chat about GPS’s.

Cath and Sue.

As we had a lot of work to do at home, we decided for one more stop – the multi cache GC18HG8 PONDering in Coatsville (Auckland).  I love Coatesville especially this little grass area, and we found lots of cool hiding spots for the first part of the multi, but came up empty handed.  We had to post a DNF and call it a day.  Tomorrow we are hoping to go geocaching with Kai_Gotti, hope the rain stays away!
